Can you think of a breakfast more refreshing than a green smoothie bowl? These three green smoothie recipes are vegan, easy to customize, packed with nutritious ingredients and perfect for loading up with all of your favorite toppings.
Components of a good green smoothie
To make a smoothie not taste like –– well, salad –– there are a few things you need to consider.
First, choose your greens carefully. While leafy greens like spinach and kale are great for just about any green smoothie, something like arugula or romaine will completely ruin your smoothie (and your day!).
Second, don't be afraid to get creative with your greens. You don't have to stick to fresh greens; there are plenty of green powders that pack an impressive nutritional punch. A few of our favorites include spirulina, chlorella and matcha.
You can also purchase a mixture of green powders and add a scoop to each smoothie. Easy to use, versatile and great for when you don't have any fresh greens!
Third, you're probably going to want to add something sweet to balance out the green. Whether you add a sweeter fruit like banana, mango or pineapple or a medjool date or two, a little sweetness will majorly improve your green smoothie.
Once you start experimenting with green smoothies, you can play around with various combinations. If you're just getting started, we recommend trying one of these recipes!
Tropical Green Smoothie
This tropical green smoothie bowl is my favorite! It's packed with a mix of spinach and kale, frozen pineapple, banana, and coconut water. Essentially, it's like transporting yourself to a sunny beach on a tropical island.
You could also use banana, mango or frozen peaches in place of the pineapple, or some combination of them. A sweeter tropical fruit perfectly balances the 2 cups of greens. Honestly if you did a blind taste test, you probably wouldn't even taste the greens!
This smoothie is perfect for those that are a bit less enthused about a super green smoothie. It's also super kid friendly!
Feel free to customize by adding ingredients like a handful of hemp seeds, vanilla protein powder, yogurt, or even avocado.
Green Tea Cucumber Smoothie
This deep green smoothie is perfect for those that want to try something out of the box!
Never thought of adding green tea to your smoothie? Now's the time to try it! Instead of adding matcha powder, we actually add brewed green tea to this smoothie.
In addition to green tea, we add in peeled cucumber, celery, spinach and a pinch of spirulina. So much green! To balance out the greens, we also add frozen banana and pineapple, which also help thicken it up for the perfect smoothie bowl texture.
I love this smoothie topped with fresh berries and toasted coconut.
Go Green Smoothie
For our third and final super green smoothie bowl, we combined spinach, cucumber, frozen mango, banana, dates, a few fresh mint leaves and some lime juice.
It's a bit tangy, a bit sweet and plenty green. A small pinch of blue spirulina gives it a beautiful, grassy green color. Totally optional, but a great addition to your pantry.
Perfect topped with your favorite granola and sliced banana.
Green Smoothie Toppings
The best part of a smoothie bowl? Toppings. Agreed?
I load mine up with all of my favorites: granola, fresh fruit, and nut butter. Here are a few more suggestions:
- Coconut flakes
- Fresh fruit like sliced banana, berries, mango, etc
- Granola (this homemade gluten free granola is my favorite)
- Nut butter: peanut, almond and cashew butter are my favorites!
- Chopped nuts or seeds: pumpkin seeds, cashews, walnuts, hemp seeds, chia seeds, etc
- Cacao nibs
- Dried fruit
