Why We Love This Recipe

  • So refreshing! This cocktail instantly transports me to the beach. It's luxurious, bright, sweet and basically sunshine in a glass. Perfect for sipping poolside (if you're so lucky!).
  • Quick and easy: With just 4 essential ingredients, this cocktail can be whipped together quickly with some passion fruit juice, limes, rum and sugar.
  • Not your average daiquiri: This daiquiri is not like those super-sugary drinks you've probably had on the beach. Passion fruit, rum, and turbinado sugar elevate this cocktail to make it a sophisticated and delicious drink. Freshly squeezed lime juice adds the perfect amount of zing, so it's nicely balanced and not too sweet!

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make this passion fruit daiquiri:

Passion fruit daiquiri ingredients including white rum and lime juice.
Whole passion fruit is essential – it's mostly for garnish.

Ingredient Notes

  • Passion fruit juice: It can be a bit tricky to find depending on where you live (we tend to have trouble finding it here in Michigan). You can also sub in pineapple juice if you can't find passion fruit juice (check out our pineapple mojito). It still tastes fantastic, but you can use either. Ceres makes a packaged passion fruit juice that you can even order online, and it's the brand we most frequently use.
  • Sugar: We like using demerara or turbinado sugar, which is golden brown in color and has large grains. The downside is that it takes a bit longer to dissolve so we let ours sit in the lime juice before combining everything together. You can also use regular granulated sugar if that's what you have on hand.
  • Rum: white rum is traditional for a daiquiri. White rum isn't nearly as strong or spiced as dark rum, making it a great choice for cocktails and mixed drinks. We love using Plantation Rum (pictured above), which tastes fantastic in this daiquiri.
  • Lime juice: freshly squeezed is ALWAYS best in cocktails. Avoid using the stuff that comes in a can or bottle, which always contains preservatives and never tastes nearly as fresh.
  • Passion fruit: Like passion fruit juice, whole passion fruit can also be tricky to find. If you do find any, it's absolutely worth adding to this daiquiri! You can simply scoop out the seeds and add them straight to your cocktail glass. Note: passion fruit is ripe when the exterior of the fruit is extremely wrinkly. If the exterior is smooth, it's not ripe (despite looking like it should be!).

Instructions

(1) Add sugar and lime juice to a cocktail shaker. Stir well to help the sugar dissolve. Let the mixture sit for ~10 minutes, giving it a stir every few minutes, until the sugar is dissolved.

(2) Fill the cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add in the rum and passion fruit juice. Shake for 10 seconds.

Left: muddling the sugar. Right: adding the cocktail ingredients into the shaker.
Make sure the sugar is dissolved before shaking up your cocktail.

(3) Strain into 2 cocktail glasses. Optional: scoop the pulp out of half of a passion fruit into each glass.

Passion fruit garnish optional – a lime wedge works, too!

Tips and FAQs

  • Let the sugar dissolve: Make sure to let the sugar dissolve into the lime juice. Don't skip this step or you will end up with sugar granules in your drink.
  • Garnish: We love garnishing this cocktail with half a passion fruit or some lime wedges. You can scoop the passion fruit seeds straight into your cocktail for extra flavor – it's my favorite part!
  • How to serve: This passion fruit daiquiri is best chilled. Pro tip: chill all of the ingredients prior to making this cocktail. You can even chill the glasses to keep it nice and cold for longer. I don't like adding a ton of ice to this drink, as it waters down the flavors quickly. However, a larger ice cube (that you might use for bourbon/whiskey) is a great option as it takes longer to melt.
  • Make ahead of time: Make the entire cocktail (without ice) and refrigerate until ready to serve. Stir or shake well before serving over ice.
  • Make it frozen: Sub passion fruit juice with frozen passion fruit cubes, like these ones. Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth. You may need to add in a few ice cubes for texture.
How can you tell if passion fruit is ripe?

The more wrinkly the skin, the more ripe the passion fruit. A passion fruit with completely smooth skin is likely not ripe and will be very sour, which will negatively affect the taste of this daiquiri.

You can also tell by the color. A green passion fruit is probably not yet ripe, whereas a darker purple or red passion fruit likely is more ripe.

Where can you buy passion fruit?

Depending on where you live, passion fruit might be difficult (or very easy!) to find. Here in Michigan, it's not available at most standard grocery stores, but it's typically in stock at specialty stores like Whole Foods.

Cheers to this passion fruit daiquiri!
