Why We Love This Recipe
- Twist on a classic: The traditional mojito, which originated in Havana, Cuba, contains rum, lime, mint, sugar, and typically club soda. Our version keeps that same tried and true base, plus the addition of passion fruit juice for a tart and tasty twist.
- Sweet, tart and refreshing: The combination of sweet passion fruit juice, tart lime juice and refreshing mint makes for a perfectly balanced cocktail. It's great as a palette cleanser and pairs really well with grilled foods - perfect for a Caribbean-inspired feast!
- Easy to make: The best thing about a mojito is how simple it is to make one. Just muddle the mint and sugar, pour the liquids over the muddled mixture, and stir to combine. Super simple and delicious!
Ingredients
Here's what you'll need to make this passion fruit mojito:
Ingredient Notes
- Sugar: We like using turbinado sugar, which is golden brown in color and has a large grain, which helps to muddle the mint and release more flavor. The downside is that it takes a bit longer to dissolve and it can be hard to find, so regular granulated sugar is perfectly fine in a pinch!
- Rum: We prefer to use white rum in this passion fruit mojito, as it's the traditional option for a mojito. (It also keeps the color nice and vibrant.) White rum is a bit milder in flavor, whereas dark rum tends to have more spice and depth of flavor. You certainly can use dark/spiced rum – it's really up to you and your preferences.
- Passion fruit juice can be a bit tricky to find depending on where you live (we tend to have trouble finding it here in Michigan). You can also sub in pineapple juice if you can't find passion fruit juice (check out our pineapple mojito). It still tastes fantastic, but you can use either. Ceres makes a packaged passion fruit juice that you can even order online, and it's the brand we most frequently use.
- Passion fruit: Like passion fruit juice, whole passion fruit can also be tricky to find. If you do find any, it's absolutely worth adding to this mojito! Note: passion fruit is ripe when the exterior of the fruit is extremely wrinkly. If the exterior is smooth, it's not ripe (despite looking like it should be!).
- Lime juice: Freshly squeezed is always best in cocktails.
How to Make a Passionfruit Mojito
(1) Add lime juice, sugar and mint leaves to a tall cocktail glass. Muddle gently to release the oil from the mint leaves and macerate the sugar. Don't over-muddle – if the mint is too bruised, it will start to taste bitter.
(2) Fill the glass with ice, then pour in the passion fruit juice, lime juice, and rum. Stir well to combine. Optional: garnish with a passion fruit half and a sprig of mint.
Tips and FAQs
- Add some bubbles: If you enjoy the carbonation of a classic mojito, you can add a splash of club soda or sparkling water to your cocktail.
- Garnish: We love to garnish these passion fruit mojitos with a sprig of mint and a passion fruit half, to feature some of the cocktail ingredients. You can even scoop some of the passion fruit seeds directly into the cocktail for extra flavor.
- What to do if you don't have a muddler: If you don't have a muddler, you can use the handle of a wooden spoon to mash the mint. It won't work as well as a muddler, but it should do the trick.
- How to serve: Mojitos are traditionally served in highball glasses with ice and a straw.
- Ice: Crushed ice is best for a mojito.
- Make ahead of time: Make the entire cocktail (without ice) and refrigerate until ready to serve. Stir or shake well before serving over ice.
A muddler is essentially used like a pestle to mash cocktail ingredients at the bottom of a glass to release their flavors. It's typically used for fruits, herbs and spices.
They're typically made out of wood, stainless steel or stone and have a long thin handle so they can reach the bottom of a tall glass or cocktail shaker.
Yes! While mint is traditional (and we think tastes most flavorful and fresh), you can substitute fresh mint with another herb if preferred. A few options include basil, thyme, rosemary or tarragon. A mix of herbs would work, too.
The mojito originated in Havana, Cuba. Allegedly looking for an effective medicine, a small boarding party turned to the local tribes, and came back with a bounty of local ingredients: an early form of rum, lime, sugarcane juice, and mint.
