Why We Love This Recipe
- Quick and easy: With just 5 ingredients, this cocktail can be whipped together quickly with a watermelon, limes, and what you already have in your liquor cabinet. If you don't have any watermelon on hand, you can try this Passion Fruit Martini or our Cucumber Martini.
- Light and refreshing: We really love watermelon-based cocktails because they're so easy to drink. This cocktail is sweet and refreshing thanks to the fresh watermelon juice, but the lime juice keeps it from being too sweet.
- Summery: This is the perfect easy cocktail for a hot summer day, since you'll be using watermelon when it's super fresh and in season.
Ingredients
Here's what you'll need to make this watermelon martini:
Ingredient Notes
- Chambord: This is raspberry liqueur, and it adds a bit of fruit and acidity to this cocktail. If you don't have any, you can leave it out or substitute with the fruit-based liqueur of your choice, like Cointreau.
- Lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice goes a long way in this cocktail, adding an acid note that contrasts the sweetness of watermelon.
- Simple syrup: We used a pre-made version, which definitely cuts down on prep time and dishes. If you're making it from scratch, combine equal parts white sugar and water, and cook until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Instructions
(1) Add watermelon to blender and blend on high for 30 seconds and strain through a small fine mesh strainer.
(2) Fill a cocktail shaker ½ full with ice. Pour in watermelon juice, vodka, raspberry liqueur, lime juice and simple syrup and shake. Pour into martini glasses and garnish with lime or slice of watermelon.
Variations
- Make it a mocktail: Leave out the vodka and raspberry liqueur, and sub in 4 fl oz of cherry juice, pineapple juice, tonic water, or club soda. If you're looking for another fruit-based mocktail, try out our Strawberry Mocktail.
- Basil watermelon martini: For an herbaceous treat, add some basil to each of the glasses, muddle the basil thoroughly, then pour in the shaken cocktail mixture.
- Gin: To make your martini a bit more floral, you can sub in gin for the vodka.
- Salted rim: If you want to create a sweet and salty margarita-style twist, you can rim your glass with some kosher salt.
- Make it spicy: Watermelon and spice are an amazing combination, so if you want to spice up your martini, try using our Jalapeño Simple Syrup instead of plain simple syrup.
Tips and FAQs
- Make sure to strain the watermelon juice after blending, or else your cocktail will be fairly pulpy. You can also purchase store bought watermelon juice, but it's definitely more expensive.
- Use a fresh, ripe watermelon to achieve the best results.
- Use freshly squeezed lime juice to maximize the flavor of your cocktail.
- To make sure you achieve that classic look, use martini glasses and garnish with a small slice of watermelon.
Watermelon is best enjoyed from May to September, when it's at the peak of freshness.
Try to find a watermelon that's heavy for its size, round, has a creamy orange-colored field spot, has a lot of webbing, and has a relatively dark color.
