🥖 Why We Love This Recipe

  • Super easy: You just need a few basic ingredients and less than 20 minutes to whip up the perfect vegan garlic bread.
  • Insanely delicious: I can't even explain how mouthwateringly delicious this garlic bread tastes and smells. It's truly impossible to resist!
  • Perfect side dish: It goes with just about anything – pasta, soup, salad, pizza, or anything else your heart desires! It's also the perfect easy option for entertaining. Always a crowd pleaser!

🧀 Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make this vegan garlic bread:

📋 Ingredient Notes

  • Bread: There are really so many types of bread you can use, but we personally prefer a softer French or Italian bread loaf. You can also use a baguette, but since it already tends to be quite crusty and hard, it may be pretty hard after baking further. You can also use a sourdough loaf, ciabatta, or another bread of choice.
  • Garlic: To keep this recipe extra simple, we use granulated garlic. If you would prefer to use fresh, substitute the granules with finely minced garlic.
  • Butter: Just about any vegan butter will work in this recipe! You could also use olive oil, but butter is more traditional and makes this vegan garlic bread extra indulgent.
  • Cheese: We use a grated vegan parmesan to add extra flavor and creaminess to our garlic bread. For a super simple recipe, you could certainly leave it out altogether. You can also swap the vegan parmesan with nutritional yeast.
  • Parsley: Technically optional, but strongly suggested! It helps add a bit of freshness to balance out all of the butter, garlic and cheese.

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions

PREP: Preheat the oven to 400˚F / 205˚C. Slice the loaf of bread in half lengthwise.

(1) Melt butter, then stir in garlic powder, salt, pepper, and parsley until well combined.

On the left: parsley, butter, and garlic powder in a bowl. On the right: butter after ingredients are stirred together.

(2) Using a basting brush, coat bread evenly with garlic butter.

Brush garlic butter onto bread loaf before baking.

(3) Sprinkle grated parmesan over the top and bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown. Slice bread and serve.

💭 Expert Tips and FAQs

  • Make it with nutritional yeast instead of parmesan: If you would prefer, you can substitute vegan parmesan cheese with 3-4 tablespoons of nutritional yeast.  If you use nutritional yeast, stir it directly into the garlic butter instead of sprinkling on top. It has the same cheesy flavor!
  • Serve with:
    • Just about any pasta dish (a few favorites include pasta al forno, vegan carbonara, and lentil bolognese)
    • Lentil meatballs
    • Lasagna
    • Pizza
    • Italian chopped salad
    • Soups (a few favorites include basic minestrone, vegan French onion soup, 3 bean soup, and vegan clam chowder)
    • Vegan meatloaf
    • And so much more!
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container or wrapped in aluminum foil in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
  • Reheat in a 350˚F oven until warmed through, or in the microwave (be sure to remove the aluminum foil!).
Can you freeze vegan garlic bread?

Yes! Wrap the bread tightly in aluminum foil, then place in a plastic or reusable bag and seal. Freeze for up to 3-6 months. Reheat in 400˚F oven for 10 minutes, until warmed and crispy.

You can also freeze the garlic bread before baking. To do so, freeze the bread in an individual layer on a baking sheet, then wrap in aluminum foil and seal in bag. Bake straight from the freezer at 400˚F for 15+ minutes.
