This Grapefruit Mimosa is a tart twist on a classic mimosa. With just 3 ingredients, this super simple cocktail is perfect for brunches, entertaining, or special occasions like Mother's Day.

Finished grapefruit mimosa with a grapefruit garnish.

A classic mimosa contains just two ingredients: orange juice and sparkling wine/champagne. We swapped out the orange juice for grapefruit juice and a touch of simple syrup to create this slightly sweet, slightly tart, and refreshingly fizzy cocktail.

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Quick and easy: This grapefruit mimosa recipe only requires 3 simple ingredients and comes together in under 5 minutes. It's super easy to make, which comes in handy when you're serving a big group of friends or family.
  • Perfect for brunch: These grapefruit mimosas make the perfect brunch cocktail because they're light and refreshing. They're the perfect accompaniment to a filling Sunday or Mother's Day brunch.
  • Refreshing: With the tartness of grapefruit and the crisp, refreshing flavor of sparkling rose or champagne, this cocktail is the perfect palate cleanser and is a great pairing for spring and summertime meals.

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make this grapefruit mimosa:

Grapefruit mimosa ingredients including rosé and grapefruit juice.
You only need 3 ingredients to make this easy and delicious mimosa!

Ingredient Notes

  • Sparkling wine: For this recipe, we're using sparkling rosé, but any sparkling wine will work just fine. Feel free to use Champagne or Prosecco in this recipe (it just tends to be more expensive).
  • Grapefruit juice: since we're also using a simple syrup in this recipe, it's best to opt for unsweetened grapefruit juice. This also allows you to control the sweetness of the mimosa while also highlighting the natural tartness of grapefruit. It should be fairly easy to find in your grocery store, as brands like Ocean Spray and Simply both sell grapefruit juice. We opted for ruby red grapefruit juice over white grapefruit juice, since ruby red is a bit sweeter and milder than its white counterpart.
  • Simple syrup: If you don't have simple syrup on hand or feel like making it at home, feel free to sub 1:1 with maple syrup or agave syrup. To make simple syrup from scratch, combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Then remove from heat and let cool.

How to Make a Grapefruit Mimosa

STEP 1: Add grapefruit juice and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice.

Pouring the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.

STEP 2: Shake thoroughly to combine, then pour into your glasses.

Left: cocktail in the shaker. Right: straining the cocktail into a glass.

STEP 3: Top with sparkling wine of your choice.

Left: topping the cocktail with rosé. Right: finished grapefruit mimosa.

Make it For a Crowd

To make this cocktail for a crowd, grab a large pitcher and stir together a 3:1 ratio grapefruit juice and simple syrup. Set aside to chill until your guests arrive.

To serve, add a grapefruit slice to each champagne flute, then pour in about 2 fl oz of the mixture into each glass, then top with your choice of sparkling wine.

Tips and FAQs

  • Chill everything if possible: If you can, chill all of the ingredients beforehand to make sure your cocktail is cold and crisp.
  • Garnish ideas: We like adding a slice of grapefruit or a couple strawberries to each glass.
  • Serve in champagne flutes: This is the classic treatment for a mimosa, and they're specifically designed to retain the carbonation of the sparkling wine.
  • Skip the simple syrup: If you don't want to use simple syrup, you can simply use a sweetened grapefruit juice instead.
  • Don't stir the sparkling wine: Whether you're making these in individual glasses or in a pitcher, don't stir the sparkling wine together with the rest of the ingredients. Pour it over the cocktail once it's in a glass.
  • Enjoy with: holiday brunch favorites, like our cranberry crumb bars, carrot lox and bagel board, polenta "eggs" benedict or carrot cake baked oatmeal.
How do you make simple syrup?

Bring equal parts sugar and water to a simmer in a small saucepan, stir until sugar dissolves, remove from heat and let cool. Simple syrup stores well in the refrigerator, so we love making a big batch for later use.

Description

This Grapefruit Mimosa is a tart twist on a classic mimosa. With just 3 ingredients, this super simple cocktail is perfect for brunches, entertaining, or special occasions like Mother's Day.

Ingredients

  • 4 ½ fl oz dry sparkling wine, chilled
  • 1 ½ fl oz grapefruit juice, chilled (we used unsweetened)
  • ¼-½ fl oz simple syrup
  • For garnish: grapefruit slice, strawberry slices, or raspberries

Instructions

  1. Add grapefruit juice and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice.
  2. Shake thoroughly to combine, then pour into your glasses.
  3. Top with sparkling wine of your choice.

Notes

Sparkling wine: For this recipe, we're using sparkling rosé, but any sparkling wine will work just fine. Feel free to use Champagne or Prosecco in this recipe (it just tends to be more expensive).

Grapefruit juice: Freshly squeezed is always best!

Skip the simple syrup: If you don't want to use simple syrup, just use a sweetened grapefruit juice instead. Or, for a less sweet cocktail, leave it out altogether.

Everything tastes best chilled: For the most refreshing cocktail, chill all of the components of this grapefruit mimosa for several hours before assembling. Since there are only 3 ingredients in this cocktail, having chilled ingredients makes a big difference. You can even chill the champagne flutes if you'd like!

How to make simple syrup: Bring equal parts sugar and water to a simmer in a small saucepan, stir until sugar dissolves, remove from heat and let cool. Simple syrup stores well in the refrigerator, so we love making a big batch for later use.
