🍍 Ingredients
Here's what you'll need to make this blue hawaiian cocktail:
📋 Ingredient Notes
- Coconut milk: A classic Blue Hawaiian cocktail actually uses cream of coconut, but we prefer regular coconut milk for a slightly less sweet option. Be sure to use lite (not full fat) coconut milk, or else the cocktail will end up a bit too thick. We use coconut milk from a can, which has much more flavor (and fewer preservatives) than anything that comes in a carton. You can typically find canned coconut milk near other southeast Asian ingredients at your grocery store.
- Note: be sure to shake up the can of coconut well before adding to the cocktail. If the cream is very separated from the liquid at the bottom of the can, you may need to transfer to a bowl to whisk (or a blender).
- Fresh fruit juices: Freshly squeezed lemon and lime juices will really elevate the flavor of this cocktail. That being said, you don't have to worry about making your own fresh pineapple juice – we used a canned/bottled juice. For best results, opt for 100% pineapple juice, not the stuff from concentrate.
- Blue Curaçao: If you've never worked with it before, blue curaçao is a bright blue liqueur flavored with Laraha, or Curaçao orange. If you don't have any, you can sub with another orange liqueur like Cointreau, and then add in a few drops of blue food coloring.
- Simple syrup: You can make your own with equal parts sugar and water, or simply use store bought. You can also sub with agave syrup if preferred.
- Rum: White rum is best in this Blue Hawaiian cocktail. We typically use white rum in mixed drinks with several ingredients – it's less expensive than aged dark rum, and also doesn't have quite as intense of a flavor.
- Vodka: Any variety will do in this Blue Hawaiian cocktail. You don't have to use your most expensive bottle since there are so many other ingredients!
🔪 Step-by-step Instructions
(1) Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds.
(2) Divide between two glasses with ice, and serve with an orange slice and/or pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry.
💭 Expert Tips and FAQs
- Garnishes: For a traditional Blue Hawaiian garnish, opt for a pineapple wedge, a maraschino cherry and a cocktail umbrella. We also love adding in an orange wedge for extra color.
- Make sure to use lite coconut milk instead of full fat, otherwise the texture will be off.
- No Blue Curaçao? Sub with Cointreau or Triple Sec and a few drops of blue food coloring.
- Freshly squeezed juices are the best way to take your cocktails (and specifically this Blue Hawaiian cocktail) to the next level. Invest in a high quality citrus squeezer/juicer – it makes all the difference! You don't need anything super fancy or high tech.
Blue Hawaiian cocktails are made with coconut milk, whereas a Blue Hawaii cocktail substitutes the coconut for a sweet-and-sour mix, which is just simple syrup and some lime juice. As a result, a Blue Hawaiian cocktail is a bit creamier and richer in flavor.
The predominant flavor a Blue Hawaiian is similar to a piña colada with a splash of orange flavor.
A traditional Blue Hawaiian is made with cream of coconut, a thick, sweetened coconut cream with a consistency similar to a syrup. We personally prefer to use coconut milk in this recipe, which makes for a slightly less sweet cocktail, and is typically easier to find (and more cost effective!). That being said, you can really use either in this recipe – it mostly depends on how sweet you like your cocktails.
Combine equal parts water and sugar (we typically use ½ cup of each) in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a low simmer and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool before using.
