These blood orange margaritas are an easy (and delicious) way to ring in the weekend. With freshly squeezed blood orange and lime juice and a splash of kombucha, they're perfectly tangy, sweet, tart and fizzy!

I love this fun, fizzy take on a classic margarita. We love taking advantage of gorgeous, seasonal blood oranges in as many recipes as possible – their tart, sweet flavor is perfectly suited for a margarita!

Plus, how about that color?!

These blood orange kombucha margaritas are great paired with Friday night pizza, tacos, nachos, or something light and fresh like this vegan ceviche. Or, of course, plain old chips and guac!

What kind of kombucha should I use?

Kombucha adds a bit of fizz, which is obviously not traditional in a margarita, but it makes for a nice twist in place of soda water.

You can use any flavor you'd like – obviously blood orange kombucha would be nice, but it may not be easy to find. A few other flavors we've used (and love!) in this recipe:

  • Pomegranate
  • Raspberry
  • Ginger
  • Lemon

Ingredients

  • Blood orange juice: freshly squeezed is definitely best. (Plus, I'm not sure you'd even be able to find it bottled!) Of course, blood oranges are 100% interchangeable with regular oranges, mandarins, or even grapefruit.
  • Lime juice: again, freshly squeezed is ALWAYS best.
  • Tequila: we use tequila blanco (silver tequila) in this recipe.
  • Triple Sec: or another orange liqueur.
  • Agave nectar: feel free to omit if you prefer a less sweet cocktail. You can also sub with simple syrup.
  • Kombucha: any flavor you like should work well here!
  • Salt for the rim: we always use fine kosher salt for margarita rims. Of course, the salted rim is totally optional.

Instructions

Prep: Rim two glasses with a lime and coat evenly in salt.

Shake: Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice and add blood orange juice, lime juice, tequila, agave and triple sec. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds and pour into two chilled glasses filled with ice.

Serve: Top off each glass with kombucha and give it a stir. Garnish with fresh mint and a slice of blood orange. Enjoy!
