Why We Love This Recipe

  • Quick and easy: Simply dip your strawberries in melted chocolate and decorate! These spooky Halloween strawberries can come together in under 20 minutes with ingredients you probably already have on hand.
  • Great for kids: This is a great activity for kids, and the end result is delicious for adults too!
  • Can be allergen friendly: You can use dairy free chocolate to make these Halloween strawberries vegan. They're also naturally gluten and nut free.

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make these Halloween strawberries:

Halloween strawberry ingredients including chocolate and strawberries.
All you need are strawberries and chocolate.

Ingredient Notes

  • Strawberries: For this recipe, the larger the strawberry, the better. This will allow for the most room possible to decorate with spooky designs.
  • Food coloring: When combining chocolate and food coloring, we suggest using gel food coloring (rather than your classic liquid food coloring). Liquid food coloring caused our chocolate to seize up and it was unusable.
  • Chocolate: We're using both white and semi-sweet chocolate chips for these Halloween strawberries. If you want to avoid coloring chocolate with food dye, you can also purchase pre-colored candy melts.

Decorating Ideas

(1) Pumpkins & Jack-O-Lanterns: To make these Halloween strawberries, we evenly dip each berry in orange chocolate (white chocolate dyed with food coloring). For the classic pumpkins, we added a little extra orange food coloring into the chocolate for a more vibrant orange. We then use a piping bag to pipe thin lines to resemble a pumpkin.

For the Jack-O-Lanterns, we used a toothpick to draw spooky faces onto the strawberries using semi-sweet chocolate.

Presentation: To make these Halloween strawberries extra fun, we served the pumpkins on a bed of Oreo "dirt"! Simply crush oreos into fine crumbs, place on a platter and arrange the strawberries on top. You can even use an herb like thyme or mint to make it look like the pumpkins are on vines.

(2) Ghosts: For these simple yet spooky ghosts, we dipped each berry in melted white chocolate. We then added two candy eyes and some melted chocolate to create an 'o' mouth shape.

You can find eyeball sprinkles online or at some grocery stores.

(3) Tombstones: For these scary tombstone strawberries, we dipped the strawberries in melted semi-sweet chocolate. We then used a piping bag to write phrases like BOO or RIP with white chocolate.

Tips and FAQs

  • After washing your strawberries, be sure to thoroughly dry them. You don't want the strawberries to have any moisture when you coat them in chocolate, otherwise it won't stick well and it may ruin the rest of the chocolate.
  • Melting your chocolate: The easiest way to melt chocolate is in the microwave. Just add your chocolate to a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave in 15-30 second increments, stirring in between each period until fully melted.
  • DIY piping: To make your own DIY piping bag, pour your melted chocolate into a zip loc bag and use scissors to cut off the tip of one of the corners of the bag.
  • Graveyard "dirt": We crushed chocolate cream sandwich cookies in a food processor to create the "dirt" in our pumpkin patch and graveyard.
  • Optional additions: You can find candy eyes online, which we used on our strawberry ghosts. Gummy worms make a great addition to pumpkin patch and graveyards, while fresh thyme stands in for pumpkin stems.
  • Use gel food coloring to dye the white chocolate. Powder or liquid varieties may cause the white chocolate to seize up.
  • When using gel coloring, don't overdo it. Just a small amount goes a long way! It's better to start with less and add more as needed.

Description

These Chocolate Covered Halloween Strawberries are the perfect, easy-to-make spooky Halloween treat for kids and adults alike. You can make them into pumpkins, ghosts, tombstones, and more!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 6 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 6 oz white chocolate chips
  • 24 large strawberries
  • A few drops of orange gel food coloring (optional)
  • Optional: candy eyes, crushed chocolate cookies, gummy worms, etc.

Instructions

Pumpkins & Jack-O-Lanterns:

  1. Add white chocolate to a heat safe bowl. Microwave in 20-30 second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until fully melted.
  2. Add in a few drops of orange gel food coloring and whisk well.
  3. Dip each strawberry in chocolate, then transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  4. For the classic pumpkins, we added a little extra orange food coloring into the chocolate for a more vibrant orange. We then use a piping bag to pipe thin lines to resemble a pumpkin. Wait until the first layer of chocolate is set before piping the lines. You can speed this up by refrigerating them for a few minutes.
  5. For the Jack-O-Lanterns, we used a toothpick to draw spooky faces onto the strawberries using semi-sweet melted chocolate.

Ghosts:

  1. Add white chocolate to a heat safe bowl. Microwave in 20-30 second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until fully melted.
  2. Dip each strawberry in chocolate, then transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  3. Wait until the chocolate is set, then use melted chocolate to secure the candy eyes to the strawberry. Pipe an "o" shape with melted chocolate for the mouth.

Tombstones:

  1. Add semi sweet chocolate to a heat safe bowl. Microwave in 20-30 second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until fully melted.
  2. Dip each strawberry in chocolate, then transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  3. Wait until the chocolate is set, then use a piping bag filled with melted white chocolate to pipe phrases like "boo" or "RIP".
