Why We Love This Recipe

  • Halloween margarita: This poison apple cocktail has a pretty similar ingredient list to a classic margarita, just with the sour apple liqueur instead of orange liqueur. It's a fun way to add a spooky twist to an otherwise approachable cocktail recipe!
  • Fun and festive: The bright green hue is always a hit, and optional shimmer dust adds extra flair. This poison apple cocktail is the perfect option for your (adult) Halloween party.
  • Sour, sweet & tart: Perfectly balanced flavors! Be careful – they go down easy.
  • Quick and easy: These poison apple cocktails are ready in just 5 minutes and require only 4 essential ingredients.

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make this poison apple cocktail:

Sour apple schnapps liqueur is the key ingredient here, both for color and flavor!

Ingredient Notes

  • Tequila: We prefer to use silver (blanco) tequila here, mostly to keep the bright green color intact. You could use reposado if preferred, but it may muddy the color.
  • Sour Apple Liqueur: We used De Kuyper Pucker Sour Apple Schnapps, which is commonly used in appletini recipes. It's a sweet and sour fruit-based liqueur with about 15% ABV. We wouldn't recommend swapping it with another liqueur, as it's the key ingredient in this poison apple cocktail.
  • Simple syrup: Use store-bought or make it yourself by stirring together equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat until the sugar is melted. You can also sub with agave syrup if you have some on hand.
  • Lime juice: Freshly squeezed is always best in cocktail recipes!
  • Edible green shimmer dust: Of course this is a completely optional ingredient, but if you happen to have any on hand, it adds a fun touch to this recipe. We get ours on Amazon and have several colors for other festive cocktail recipes, like this shimmery Santa Baby cocktail.
  • Black salt: Another fun optional ingredient, and definitely not essential to this recipe. We ordered a small bag on Amazon. You can also just use regular salt for the rim!

Instructions

(1) If making a salt rim, dip the edge of your cocktail glass in simple syrup (or use a lime wedge to moisten the rim), then (2) roll the rim of the glass in salt.

The optional black salt rim is spooky and delicious.

(3) Add sour apple schnapps, tequila, lime juice and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice. Shake well for ~10 seconds.

If adding in shimmer dust, add in and shake for a few more seconds.

Strain into salt-rimmed cocktail glass and enjoy.

Tips and FAQs

  • If you don't have shimmer dust but still want a bright green color, add in a drop or two of green food coloring before shaking the cocktail.
  • How to make simple syrup: Bring equal parts sugar and water to a simmer in a small saucepan, stir until sugar dissolves, remove from heat and let cool. For a small batch, we suggest ½ cup each of sugar and water. Store in refrigerator.
  • With or without salt rim: This poison apple cocktail is great with or without the rim. We added one since it's similar to a margarita recipe, but feel free to drink as is.
  • Make ahead: If you want to make a large batch for entertaining, you can measure out all of the ingredients several hours before serving. Just be sure to stir or shake well again before serving so all of the ingredients are evenly mixed.
