Why We Love This Recipe

  • More mules!: We're huge fans of mules, like this Tequila Mule or our Cranberry Moscow Mule. They're refreshing, easy to make, and so versatile, and this rum Moscow mule adds another option to your rotation.
  • Twist on a classic: A classic Moscow mule is made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice, usually served in a copper mug. We've swapped out vodka for rum for a unique take on a classic cocktail, which helps to keep things fun and makes for an interesting cocktail to serve at your next party.
  • Quick and easy: It only takes 5 minutes to whip up one of these 4-ingredient rum Moscow mules from scratch. Plus, you probably already have everything you need on hand! What could be easier?

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make this rum moscow mule:

Rum Moscow Mule ingredients including lime juice and ginger beer.
You can use any variety of rum in this moscow mule.

Ingredient Notes

  • Rum: You can really use any variety in this cocktail; it mostly depends on your preferences. For an option that's most similar to a classic moscow mule, we suggest white rum. For something with a bit more flavor, try an aged rum. If you love the flavor of spiced dark rum, you can also use that – it will just change the flavor of the cocktail.
    • Whichever variety you decide to use, make sure it's good quality. Since there are only 4 ingredients in this rum moscow mule, the flavor will definitely shine through.
  • Ginger beer: We recommend using a lower sugar ginger beer if you can find it, since we opt to add a bit of simple syrup to our cocktail, which adds more sweetness. The higher quality ginger beer, the better this cocktail will taste. We personally love Gosling's.
  • Simple syrup: You can use store-bought simple syrup to cut down on prep time, but it's also super easy to make from scratch. Simply combine equal parts water and sugar in a saucepan and heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let the simple syrup cool before adding to your cocktail. Agave nectar is a great substitute.
  • Lime juice: Freshly squeezed is always best in cocktails– trust us!

Instructions

(1) Add rum, lime juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice.

Pouring the liquids into the cocktail shaker.
For the most refreshing cocktail, refrigerate each component before mixing up your drink.

(2) Shake well for 10 seconds, then strain into a copper mug (or another cocktail glass) filled with ice.

Shake for about 10 seconds to make sure everything is evenly incorporated and properly chilled.

(3) Top with 3-4 ounces of ginger beer and gently stir.

Tips and FAQs

  • Don't shake or stir the ginger beer: To preserve the carbonation in the ginger beer, don't add it to the cocktail shaker with the rest of the ingredients. It should be poured on top of the finished cocktail. You can stir gently to incorporate it with the rest of the ingredients.
  • Garnish: This rum Moscow mule looks great garnished with a simple lime wedge and/or sprig of mint, but you can also serve it up plain.
  • Copper mug: A copper mug is the traditional flourish for a Mule, but it also helps to keep the drink super cold, making it even more refreshing.
  • Try infused simple syrup: To customize the flavor of your cocktail, you can infuse homemade simple syrup with an ingredient of choice. It would be delicious with this cinnamon simple syrup if you're using spiced rum, jalapeño simple syrup for a spicy version, or brown sugar simple syrup for a caramel-like flavor.
  • Try infused rum: You can also play around with homemade liquor infusions for a more flavorful cocktail. Check out our comprehensive guide on how to infuse alcohol here.
  • Mocktail (non-alcoholic) version: Substitute the rum with extra lime juice and ginger beer. Alternatively, you can sub rum with a nonalcoholic spirit alternative, like this alcohol-free rum. It's surprisingly similar to the real thing!
How do you clean copper mugs?

Copper tarnishes pretty easily, so be sure to wash your mugs in soapy, warm water right after using. Rinse well, then dry completely. Any leftover water spots may cause oxidation and tarnishing.

How do you make simple syrup?

Combine equal parts water and granulated sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. (We usually use ½ cup of each for a small batch). Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool before using. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Squeezing a lime into the finished mules.
This mule is perfectly balanced and super refreshing. Cheers!
