Description

Passion fruit, with its tropical and tart flavor, makes for the perfect addition to a traditional margarita. This passion fruit margarita is vibrant, tangy, and the perfect blend of tart and sweet.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Margarita:

  • 3 ounces passion fruit juice
  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1/2 ounce orange liqueur (Cointreau, triple sec, etc)
  • 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/4 ounce simple syrup or agave
  • Half of a passion fruit for serving (optional)

Rim (optional):

  • 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon lime zest

Instructions

  1. To rim the glasses, run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass to moisten. Mix together the sugar, salt and lime zest on a plate and dip the rim of the glass in the mixture to coat. Fill glasses with ice.
  2. Add passion fruit juice, tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and agave to a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice. Shake well to combine, then strain into cocktail glasses. Optional: top with the seeds from half of a passion fruit. Enjoy!

Notes

Passion fruit juice: This is actually easier to find than you might think, and a lot of stores stock this Ceres Passion Fruit Juice in the juice aisle. We think this is the best product.

Fresh passion fruit: This is optional, but it adds some textural intrigue to the cocktail, and they also just look cool. Plus, nothing beats the flavor of fresh passion fruit!

Tequila: We used a reposado tequila in this recipe, but silver or blanco tequila is a widely available and easier to find substitute.

How to make simple syrup: You can use store-bought simple syrup, but it's actually super easy to make from scratch in just a few minutes! Simply combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan and heat over medium low just until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool before using in this cocktail.

Storage: You can keep leftover margaritas stored in the fridge for 24-48 hours (although they taste best fresh!). Make sure to shake or stir well again before serving.

Rim: The salted lime zest rim is optional, but makes this passion fruit margarita extra delicious!
