Cocktail: 8 ounces bourbon or whiskey 8 ounces cranberry juice (we used no sugar added) 2 ounces cranberry simple syrup (quantities below) Optional: a few dashes angostura bitters Garnish: orange peel and/or sugared cranberries and rosemary Cranberry Simple Syrup: 1/3 cup cranberry juice 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 cinnamon sticks 4 whole cloves 2 cardamom pods
Add cranberry juice and brown sugar to a small saucepan over high heat, and stir until sugar is dissolved. Add in cinnamon sticks, cloves, and cardamom pods.
Once mixture is boiling, reduce the heat to medium and simmer gently for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let the syrup sit for 40-45 minutes to absorb flavor from the spices and to cool. Strain/remove spices.
Fill a small pitcher or mixing glass ⅔ of the way with ice. Add bourbon, cranberry juice, simple syrup and bitters (if using) and stir well.
